Day One, Santa Clarita, CA to Tucson, AZ - 530 Miles
Lane and I departed Santa Clarita this morning under overcast skies and a light mist on the windshield at 6:00 a.m. and met Steve in La Canada.Thirty minutes later we met Bill in Ranch Cucamonga. After passing through Palm Springs and climbing out of the Cochella Valley we stopped for gas at the Chiraco Summit adjacent to the General George Patton Museum for gas a quick comfort break--old men on diauretics, you know. The temperature increased dramatically from sub-60's to high 90's. Jackets were packed away, most likely for the duration of the trip. How much is that "If it fits it ships" deal from the post office? The rest of our friends and treaveling companions, Bob, Tim and Sylvia, left last Friday to visit relatives in Texas. We'll meet up with them on Monday in Houston, TX.
Today was a "power day." That means, make miles and sacrifice sight seeing. We stopped for a quick Cracker Barrel restaurant lunch in Buckeye, AZ, and were back on the road in 30 minutes. Traffic was relatively light and we rolled in to Tucson, AZ, at 3:30 p.m., registering at the Holiday Inn Express, you know, free breakfast, etc. We were in the pool 30 minutes later rinsing off the 97 degree Arizona heat. We dined at Rusty's Sports Bar and Grille. Our proprietor, Anita Jo, and our server, Stacie, were most gracious. The 10% discount as a hotel guest didn't hurt either.
After dinner we returned to our hotel and washed the afternoon bugs off the bikes as has become our ritual. We'll be up early tomorrow headed for Ft. Stockton, TX. We anticipate being in San Antonio on Saturday.
Thanks for checking in faithful followers.
John and the Usual Suspects.
