Day 13, Hardeeville, SC to Charleston, SC 88 Miles

Wow! I barely had time to sneeze this morning and we were already in Charleston, SC, only 88 miles from our last destination, Hardeeville, SC. We don't want to get too far ahead of Bob who is still in Savanna, GA, waiting for his motorcycle to be repaired. We hope to see him soon. Meanwhile, we'll take in some of the sights of Charleston.

We arrived too early to check into our hotel, so we headed over to the Low Country Harley-Davidson. Lane needed a new speaker/earphone rocker switch for his bike. Unfortunately, they did not stock the part, so he had to settle for a T-shirt.

We checked into the Mills House Hotel in downtown Charleston and realized we've gotten way above our raising. This place is nice with marble floors, crystal chandeliers and table cloths in the dining room. I'd be embarrassed to ask where the washer and dryer is. It ain't no Motel 6. We got an early check-in and some lunch recommendations with the help of our friendly front desk clerk, and fellow Harley rider,  Rob. Thanks Rob. Parking is another matter. Twenty dollars per motorcycle per day, no in and out, in the adjacent county parking structure, no exceptions!

Our first attempt at sightseeing was a bust. We wanted to see the Civil War submarine, Hunley, that sank in Charleston Harbor more than 100 years ago and was just recently recovered from the sea bottom. We went to the restoration center and were informed by a rather curt security guard that they only give tours on Saturday and Sunday, but the gift shop is open. I informed him that if we don't get to see the submarine, they don't get our tourist dollars.

After checking into the hotel, we walked downtown, had lunch. And yes, we wandered through another Harley-Davidson T-shirt store, making a small cash deposit before departing. We may need to seek professional assistance for this HD T-shirt shopping affliction. Later in the evening, a few of us gathered in the hotel lounge to exchange lies, brag a little, tell off-color jokes, break bread and enjoy a few adult beverges before retiring.

The weather report is not encouraging. It looks like if we stay in Charleston, SC, we may be stuck there for the next four days as a string of severe thunderstorms are making their way from the mid-west to the east coast and will soon arrive over Charleston. We'll see what the morning brings and decide whether to stay or go.

Until then, I remain your faithful scribe.

John and the Usual Suspects.
